New TSA rules for batteries in your baggage starting Jan 1st 2008

I don’t recall seeing this in the news. But I was out on the TSA site looking something up for an upcoming trip and thought I would pass it on.
From their Website:
Effective January 1, 2008, spare lithium batteries - extra batteries not installed on devices - will no longer be allowed in checked baggage. Spare lithium batteries may be packed in carry-on baggage and lithium batteries installed in a device may be packed in either checked or carry-on, as long as the battery is installed in the device
The link to the page can be found here. Thy also point to a DOT site that talks about battery saftey tips.
Depending on the length of the flight, I will usually have a spare laptop battery with me and I always bring spare batteries with me for the camera gear. Both camera batteries and batteries for the flash units.
It will be interesting to see if they put any limits on the number or type of batteries you can carry-on. Or, if they too will get the Ziploc treatment.

I have a rechargeable 6 volt lead acid battery used to power a camcorder light. It is enclosed in a cloth case for attaching to a belt. Can I carry this on an airplane as carry-on baggage?

That’s a good question. I would think that if it is sealed (as in you can’t add water to it like the older car batteries) and it is in some type of case, you should be fine.
But, I would either check with the airlines or the TSA site to be sure. I don’t claim to be an expert on this, just a guy who researches stuff.
I did a quick search on the TSA site and I found this link TSA Allowed/Prohibited List. It provides a column for both carry on and checked baggage. The only thing I saw there was a mention of batteries that could spill.
Oh, as I was scrolling through the list, I also noticed that those gel inserts you get for your shoes (Dr. Scholl’s, etc) are not allowed.
It’s an interesting read.
