Why is it so intoxicating???

Posted by Ron on April 19, 2007

I don’t know why I find it so mesmerizing, but I’ve been hooked on Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel.  Every time its on I find myself watching it.  What is it about these guys that makes me want to watch???  I’ve got it on in another window as I’mwriting this and doing a few other odds and ends.

For those not familiar (is that even possible), Deadliest Catch follows a group of Alaska crab fisherman during the crab season.  You see how they they do their job and the perilous conditions they work in.

It’s on every Tuesday night at 9:00.  Set your Tivo’s!!!  Click the link above to find out more about the show.  Gotta go, it’s back from commercial…

:-D

I ain’t know nothing no more…

Posted by Ron on April 13, 2007

Just a quick entry about a site I’ve been finding very useful lately, Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips to Clean Up Your Writing.  Between text messaging abbreviations, writing e-mails full of TLA’s (Three letter acronyms), and quick IMs, my command of English language seems to be declining.

Modern technology seems to be making subtle changes to our language, slowly eroding those skills.  When you look at how language has changed over the past few hundred years, what’s going to happen over the next decade or so with the frantic pace that drives technology?

The Grammar Girl site is the first step in sstemming the decline and a definte “must see.” I highly recommend it.

Happy “Gōruden Uīku”

Posted by Ron on April 13, 2007

Friends in JapanThings have been busy so before I forget or get side tracked, I just wanted to wish my friends in Tokyo a happy Golden Week.  I wish I was there to celebrate it with you.

For those not familiar with Golden Week, it’s a bit like our Night out with Friendsspring break.  But, it’s celebrated by the whole country, young and old.  The whole country takes the week off.  It’s like the summer in some European countries.

Golden Week is made up of 4 holdings that span a week long period.  The holidays that make it up are:

April 29 - Showa Day (Showa no hi)
April 29 is the former birthday of EmperorShowa, who died in the year 1989. Until 2006, Greenery Day (see May 4) used to be celebrated on this day.

May 3 - Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi)
On this day in 1947, the new post war constitution was put into effect.

May 4 - Greenery Day (Midori no hi)
Greenery Day is dedicated to the environment and nature, because the emperor loved plants and nature.

May 5 - Children’s Day (Kodomo no hi)

People head out of town on vacation, relax, get energized, and prepared to start the new fiscal year.  It’s a great time.  It comes right after the celebration of the Sakura or Cherry Blossom at the end of March, start of April.

So, to my Tokyo friends, enjoy the holiday, have fun, and have a beer on me (Kampai!!).  Miss you guys… :-)

Goodbye Axim, I knew thee well…

Posted by Ron on April 11, 2007

Dell Axim X50vSad news on the gadget front. It looks like the Dell Axim is no more. I came across the news on quite a few sites like AximSite and Engadget.

I love my Axim. It has been a true friend and travel companion for the past few years and hopefully will do so for many more.

I have the X50v model and it’s a great little device. I use it mainly for travelling RIP Aximand as a phone around the house (* more on that below). I’ve got it dialed in the way I want it and, in most cases, I can take this with me and not even miss the laptop. It makes the backpack so much lighter and easier to deal with. I can also get through security at the airport without having to take it out of the bag.

For those not familiar with the Axim, here’s a few of the specs.

  • Powered by the Intel® XScaleTM PXA270 Processor at 624MHz
  • Brilliant 3.7″ color TFT VGA display with 640×480 resolution
  • Integrated Intel® 2700G multimedia accelerator with 16MB video memory
  • Integrated 802.11b and BluetoothTM Wireless Technologies
  • Packed with 64MB SDRAM and 128MB Intel StrataFlash® ROM
  •

Here’s why this has been my best travel gadget.

    No, its not a Kramer… It’s a Pickle…

Posted by Ron on April 8, 2007

The PickleI was catching up on my personal e-mail and rummaging around the net and I came across this item on the Potojojo site.  Photojojo is a site of DIY photo projects, tips, gear reviews, etc.  Check it out.

Anyway, I came across an item for for a little web app called Museumr on Dumpr.net.  Ever want to have your photo in a museum but don’t have the time or desire to go the “traditional” route?  Well, here’s your shortcut.

You can get a link for posting or print a pic. Enjoy…
